HIGHWAY PATROL
Guestbook - 2007

Happy 2007 to all you Highway Patrol fans. We may be getting older but the show stills lives on. 50 years ago it was in its 3rd season and among the biggest hits on TV. Since starting the site more people have built classic cars based on the show, you now can buy replicas of the patches they used as well as all 156 episodes on DVD, and 10-4 Day has become a major event in Hollywood. Last year they even remade All the Kings Men but it was a flop without Broderick. I'm glad people still enjoy coming to enjoy this site. As long as you keep visiting we'll keep adding to it and making it better...10-4.

Looks like 2007 will be getting off to a good start with this website. There's always a wealth of information on this site. Over the years I was able to get VHS tapes of H.P. just by looking on here. On October 4th of each year, I try to watch a few episodes of H.P. My favorite episode is the one with Clint Eastwood. When I first watched this episode, I thought he was the bad guy, but it was the Cafe owner who was the culprit. He went on and on how Motorcycle Clubs were all alike and a bunch of hoodlums. It was amazing on how
the Cafe owner got caught when The Highway Patrol sent a Patrolman disguised as a Motorcyclist to the Cafe.

Gary;

This week the 'Encore Western Channel' has started running repeats of Gene Barry's old ZIV TV series 'Bat Masterson' (1958 - 1961). Today at 04:00PM CST the first two episodes will be broadcast. The second episode 'Two Graves For Swan Valley' has special guest star Broderick Crawford as the renegade Quantrill-like Sgt. Foley. Look for William Boyett as Foley's henchman Dank and narration from 'Highway Patrol' narrator Art Gilmore. That episode will be broadcast at 04:30PM CST.

The 'Encore Starz Western Channel' is broadcasting all 107 episodes (their count but other sources list 109) of 'Bat Masterson' uncut and digitally restored by MGM-UA. Look for this series to be released on DVD very soon. If that is true than 'Highway Patrol' is going to be next perhaps even later this year.

Being a "21-50-by" fan from the begining, I don't recall any CHP cars or police cars in general at that time anywhere in California having blue lights, back then they were all red and amber or red and clear. I don't think that the passenger side had a spot light at all and the regulation Highway Patrol insignia on the doors was the same as it is on today's units.
Richard Green     green1010@cox.net    Sun City, AZ USA    Jan 20/2007 00:18 PST
Richard the insignia was designed by Ziv to be generic. It was put over the CHP one until the later part of the first season when they started using non CHP units. As far as the blue light goes, command rank could run a blue on the right side as an option according to the 1955 CA Code book. I do it because of Mathews was the boss and it looks cooler! 10-4

Gary, I'm wondering why you haven't included Ted Knight as one of those who "later became famous"? Knight played the reporter on the "Expose" episode, and later became very well know for his role as the egotistical news anchorman Ted Baxter on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."

Mike...thanks. We have corrected this.

I love the Canada Dry commercial with Broderick Crawford, Aldo Ray, and Jack Palance!

Thanks for finding it and allowing all of us to view it again after thirty years at this great website.

Through the web site for Diecast Station (www.diecaststation.com)a found a scale model of the 1955 Buick Century hardtop, the type used in the series,
"Highway Patrol". I trying to find some one in the San Diego area, that can
turn it into a scale model of the "Highway Patrol" Broadrick Crawford patrol
car. I am going over to a new hobby shop that sells scale model cars, in the

Hi Gary I am addicted to your site, just like the series Highway Patrol is, can't get enough. Love that find of Broderick made a commercial never new that happen. I got some possible good news, MGM is going to release Sea Hunt on DVD restored soon. My sources say they are in the process of remastering the Highway Patrol series with the original 35 mm prints. It will be a long tedious process to clean up the film and put it on DVD.
Until then if you want the series I sell the full series on my site highwaypatroldvd.com I sell it at an affordable price.
Once MGM releases Highway Patrol on DVD, my web site will be history.

Gary:

I can remember when I, along with my best childhood friends, awaited each espisode of Highway Patrol every Thursday evening at 7:00, nothing could match the excitement. Except that for me the show was titled "Patrulla de Caminos", dubbed in Spanish and it was aired on CMBF, Channel 4, Havana, Cuba. Thursday night nothing was more important than watching "Patrulla", as we simply called the show. I think that you do not hear from too many Highway Patrol fans like me. I was in my early teens and I was able to watch every eposide from 1955 to 1959. In mid 1960 the Castro government, by now beginning to show its communist inclination, banned most American T.V. shows aired exclusively on CMBF to the entire island. Soon after, October 1960, my parents sent me to the US, never to return again.

Of course, after we watched all the new episodes, re-runs were a must, aired weekly until the new season arrived. I remember going to the movies, where American movies were shown with subtitles, and discussing later with my friends how different the voice of Broderick Crawford sounded in the picture compared to his "Spanish" voice. I know that they arrived with the sound track already in Spanish, because some one who worked at CMBF told us. We went as far as taking up a collection to see if we could get this man to purchase from the TV station one or two of the episodes that we liked best for the season, and planned to run them on the local movie theater. That tells you in part what big fans of "Patrulla" we were. Of course, CMBF aired many different American TV shows such as I Love Lucy, Bat Masterson, Perry Mason, Boston Blackie, etc, all dubbed in Spanish, and I think that most, if not all, of the shows produced by ZIV. One last note, they were exported, to Cuba at least, by a company named Hollywood Television Service whose logo, the front of a TV set covering the world, appeared at the beginning of the program.

Well, so much for Highway Patrol history in Spanish. No other TV program that I have watched ever caused such a profound impact on me, in part because, like many of my childhood friends, I had a love affair with automobiles and regarded the American law enforcement agencies as the best of the best in the world. Or is it perhaps because those who grew up in that era, regardless of the country, were just plain and simple dreamers?

Congratulations on this site that transported me back to a beautiful time in my life, long, long ago.

HI THERE!My name is Jim and I also grew up watching Highway Patrol. I hadnt thought of it in a long time til this evening when I happened to catch the end of "All The Kings Men" on tv. That got me thinking about crawford and Highway Patrol c so i looked up Crawford on the net and found your very cool site! I had forgotten how cool that show was! I was born in 1946 so i watched it first run as a kid. My dad, gone since 1966 used to say he served in WWII with Crawford. In 1956 he bought a new Buick Special 2 door hardtop, turquois with a white top. He even resembled Crawford somewhat facially and in build, but not in mannerism! My dad did love his booze also tho! That Buick was the first new car dad ever bought, and i still remember that fantastic new car smell! I dont think they smell that way anymore.....probably un pc toxic chemicals huh? My dad used to let me drive it up n down the driveway as a kid til i managed to scrape the side of it against the porch one day! We live in Michigan, so after a couple years it started rusting on both sides just aft the doors. Every year dad would break out the Bondo and spray paint tryin to fix it. but the rust always came back. In 1961 he traded it in for a new Chevy Belair bubbletop sport coupe with a 348 and 4 speed. Boy did i have fun with THAT car! It was a chic magnet too! Your 55 Buick Highway Patrol car is awsome Gary! I hope to have a collector car someday and an old Buick will definitely be on my list. I think a 59 with the cool fins would be sweet, or a late 40s fastback too! Buicks rule!.....I just hope they dont go the way of poor Oldsmobile! Well...guess thats my story....hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed your site Gary. I still miss my dad.... and that 56 Buick....great memories!!!! Take good care of that way cool Buick dude! Jim....waterford mich oh yea....10-4!

10-4-07 will be here shortly, and plan to watch a DVD of Highway Patrol. I grew up with that show, and loved it back then. Still love it today! I don't get stressed watching Highway Patrol, compared to the modern TV shows of today. Some people think I nuts for saying this, but to each is own. On May 5th every year, I listen to Cinco De Mayo on CD, and have that song by 3 different artists. On August 16th every year, I listen to Elvis Presley, and have about 30 songs by him.
Love the oldies on CD & DVD & always will    Sep 25/2007 06:58 PDT

Today (10-4-07) has been quite busy & hectic, but I managed to watch one episode of Highway Patrol - The Non Rowdy Motorcyclists w/Clint Eastwood. This is one of my favorite episodes. Another favorite episode is where a kid identifies a robber (Paul Engle plays the kid as Jimmy James). Will try to watch one or two episodes of H.P. tonight! 10-4

Fifty Nine years ago today on 10/4/1948 I went to work at McDonnell Aircraft Co. in St. Louis Missouri. Another fellow and I hired in on the same date and he also shared my birthday of 23 July 1930. So we celebrated our hire in date
of 10/4 and called it Broderick Crawford Day. This celebration went on for many years in the Flight Test Instrumentation Lab and and the last I heard it still does even though I have been retired for 20 years. 10-4 good buddy.

Gary,
A friend sent me a clip of your CNN appearance. Great stuff! We'll even let it slide that you have a hardtop coupe and the Chief drove a two door sedan! Yours is COOLER! Interesting that they used two doors sedans in the show instead of four doors.

We are great fans of the show.

I do voiceovers and work at XM Satellite Radio. I have a nicely cleaned-ip copy of the theme if you would like it. Email me for an mp3.

Hi: I guess if Gary is the #1 Fan of Highway Patrol, I must be #2! I enjoyed the show as a kid and Broderick Crawford was my hero ( still is, in memory). I remember when he was in the hospital during his last days with us--I mailed him a get well card and sent it certified where it had to be signed for. I got the green card back that was signed by the hospital so that meant a lot to me knowing that it actually arrived. He is greatly missed by me and I will never forget the show that I watched so religiously when it was on the air. Now, I am trying to buy all 156 episodes so that I can relive my child hood memory. 10-4..21-50 bye....Thanks for the memories. Clark Feller

I was born in 1959 and this show was my absolute favorite when I was a little kid in Chicago (moved to Hawaii in 1969). I really loved this show. I was sorry to see on your home page here that the show has never been put on tape or disc. I would buy it in a minute if it was. I haven't seen an episode since 1965 and I would dearly love to see it again.

I can still picture Broderick Crawford leaning against his car door saying "10-4, 10-4!"

I have a book about TV and was surprised to read that it only said "Highway Patrol" on the cars and never identified a state (I always assumed it was California).

Aloha from another BIG Highway Patrol fan! :)
